Why choose the Dr. E. Boekmanschool?
If you plan to stay in the Netherlands for more than 1-2 years, choosing a local Dutch public school like Boekmanschool is a great option. Most of our 390 pupils (age 4-12) live within walking distance from the school, making it easy to arrange playdates or to simply meet each other in the local playgrounds.
Around 14% of children starting at our school are ‘internationals’: their families recently arrived in the country and often don’t speak Dutch yet. Kleuters (age 4-6) learn the language through immersion in groep 1 and groep 2. Older children (age 6-12) go to an external newcomers class first and then join their peers in a regular class at Dr. E. Boekmanschool (meaning: they usually don’t ‘lose’ a year). We have a dedicated NT2 (Dutch as a Second Language) teacher to assist children who are learning Dutch.
Parents are encouraged to keep speaking their native language to their children. It positively impacts the socio-emotional development of children. A well-developed mother tongue also helps with learning another language, such as Dutch.
* We ensure that pupils can develop in a safe environment.
* Our teachers are highly motivated and enthusiastic.
* We give space to pupils to learn in different ways: with head, heart and hands.
* Furthermore a great deal of attention is given to: sports, culture, music, arts, visiting museums and other important cultural institutions.
* Continuous development and commitment so that we can provide our pupils adequate education.
Information about the school
The Dr. E. Boekmanschool is a public primary school in the Plantagebuurt in the centre of Amsterdam. Our school has about 400 pupils, spread over 17 groups. We stand for extraordinary education with great results, education with a world view where pupils can go explore and develop. We focus on quality in basic skills, but we also devote much attention to a positive and safe school climate and sports, culture and citizenship. We pay great attention to 21st-century skills, like computational thinking, cooperating, creative and critical thinking and working on research questions and stimulate our pupils’ curiosity.
